Методические указания по выполнению контрольной работы

Контрольная работа является одной из форм контроля знаний, умений и навыков обучающихся по дисциплине «Авиационный английский язык».

Контрольная работа выполняется по учебно-методическому пособию Авиационный английский язык. Контрольная работа для студентов заочной формы обучения : учеб.-метод. пособие / сост. Г.С. Громова, Г.Н. Элатомцева. – Ульяновск : УВАУ ГА (И), 2014. – 2014. – 48 с.

В 7 семестре выполняется один из двух вариантов первой, второй или третьей части контрольной работы (Part I=III). Распределение вариантов контрольной работы осуществляется по таблице, приведенной ниже в Приложении 1.

Для успешного выполнения заданий, предложенных в контрольной работе, необходимо знать лексико-грамматический материал и самостоятельно изучить темы дисциплины по учебным пособиям:

Контрольная работа выполняется письменно в тетрадях и предоставляется на факультет безотрывных форм обучения до проведения зачета.

Homebuilt Aircraft

Small aircraft can be designed and constructed by amateurs as homebuilts. Other aviators with less knowledge make their aircraft using premanufactured kits, assembling the parts into a complete aircraft.

Also known as amateur-built aircraft or kit planes, homebuilt aircraft are constructed by people for whom this is not a professional activity. Although the aircraft is constructed by an amateur, the finished product is often of good quality; the safety record of homebuilt aircraft is generally comparable to that of certified aircraft, once out of the testing phase that is required after construction is complete.

The history of amateur-built aircraft can be traced to the beginning of aviation itself. Even if the Wright brothers, Clement Ader, and their successors had commercial objectives in mind, the first aircraft were amateur-built, constructed by passionate enthusiasts whose goal was to fly. In 1928 Henry Mignet published plans for the HM-8 aircraft as did Pietenpol for his Air Camper. Bernie Pietenpol later constructed a factory, and in 1933 began creating and selling partially-constructed aircraft kits.

Homebuilt aircraft are generally small one- to four-seat sportsplanes which employ simple methods of construction. Fabric-covered wood or metal frames and plywood, fiberglass, carbon fiber or Kevlar and other composites as well as full aluminum construction techniques are being used. Borrowing from improving technology in the manufacturing side of aviation, homebuilders show great creativity in introducing innovations. Standardized components such as autopilots and more advanced navigation instruments are being used. Homebuilt aircraft gained in popularity in the USA in the 1950s with the formation of the Experimental Aircraft Association. In 2003, the number of homebuilt aircraft produced in the USA exceeded the number produced by any single certified manufacturer. A small number of jet kitplanes have been built since 1970s.

In November 1944 in Chicago 52 nations signed the Convention on International Civil Aviation. The 96 Articles of the Convention contained international standards and recommended practices. It was decided that ICAO would come into being (start working) after the Convention was ratified by 26 states. It happened on the 4-th of April in 1947. Montreal was chosen as the headquarters of the Organization.

The ICAO activities are numerous. The main task of the ICAO is to provide the necessary level of standardization for the safe and regular air operations. SARPs (International Standards and Recommended Practices), which designated as Annex 11 to the Convention, regulate air navigation, recommend installation of navigation facilities and suggest the reduction of customs formalities. International standards must be strictly observed by all member States. Recommended practices are desirable but not essential.

ICAO has a Sovereign body - the Assembly, and a governing body - the Council. The Assembly meets once in 3 years and reviews the work in the technical, economic and legal fields in detail.

The Council is a permanent body composed of representatives of the Contracting states. Its first President was Edward Warner.

The Council is assisted by the Air Navigation Committee, the Legal Committee, the Committee on Unlawful Interference and some others. One of the major Council duties is to adopt International Standards and Recommended Practices. It may act as an arbiter between Member States. And, in general, it may take any steps necessary to maintain the safety and regularity of air operations.

There are 18 Annexes to the Convention, they cover all aviation problems.

The Secretariat staff, headed by the Secretary General, provides the permanent organizational work. ICAO has 6 regional offices. The main languages of ICAO are English, French, Spanish and Russian.

In 1958 the Warner Awards were established by ICAO for outstanding contributions to international civil aviation.
